"Critics pronounced the spy novel dead after the fall of the Berlin Wall; The Poet Game shows that it is alive and well and living in Manhattan. The voice is spare, clean, and insightgul. The perspective is further explored by contrasting ethnographyu with more traditional hypothesis testing approaches in the social sciences. Numerous examples are used, drawn for the most part from the author's field experiences in South India and with urban U.S. heroin addicts. During the late summer, she has to remain away from the farm and the other children all day, for her chore is to tend alone the herd of cows as they wander through woods and meadows where pastures seem best to them. One day a strange old woman comes to Rosabel's aid at a frightening time- when the cows are running rampant through a neighbor's cornfield. A warm friendship developws between the old woman and the young girl, although it must remain a secret because 'Granny Meg' is hiding in the woods from the town officials who, 'for her own good,' want to put her into the County Home." 36 Barzini, Luigi The Italians
New York, New York, U.S.A. Atheneum 1979 0689705409 Paperback Very Good
352 ppg including index and maps. Clean overall. Top right front cover bumped. "In this consummate portrait of the Italian people, bestselling author, publisher, journalist, and politician Luigi Barzini delves deeply into the Italian national character, discovering both its great qualities and its imperfections. Barzini is startlingly frank as he examines "the two Italies": the one that created and nurtured such luminaries as Dante Alighieri, St. Thomas of Aquino, and Leonardo da Vinci; the other, feeble and prone to catastrophe, backward in political action if not in thought, "invaded, ravaged, sacked, and humiliated in every century." Deeply ambivalent, Barzini approaches his task with a combination of love, hate, disillusion, and affectionate paternalism, resulting in a completely original, thoughtful, and probing picture of his countrymen."Trade Paperback. 37 Beitzell, Edwin Point Lookout Prison Camp for Confederates
Maryland 1999 Fifth Hardcover Very Good Very Good
This book is the first complete history of the prison camp for Confederates at Point Lookout, Maryland and it is entirely factual. The data outlining the terrible sufferings of the prisoners which resulted in over 1500 deaths in a period of less than two years that the prison was in operation is taken from War of the Rebellion, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, the large collection of Point Lookout Official War Records at the U.S. National Archives in Washington, DC, the diaries and other accounts of life in the prison camp and other reliable sources. It is a story of cruel decisions in high places - decisions made coldly and without compassion. It is a story of diarrhea and dysentery, of typhoid and typhus, of burning sands and freezing cold in rotten tents - it is a story of senseless shootings by the guards - it is a story of despair and death - death of many men that could have been saved. The author is well equipped to tell this story of his ntaive county. From 1956 through 1983 he was the Editor of the Chronicles of St. Mary's County Historical Society, in which much of this material has previously appeared.

38 Belford, Barbara Violet : The Story of the Irrepressible Violet Hunt and Her Circle of Lovers and Friends - Ford Madox Ford, H. G. Wells, Somerset Maugham, and Henry James
New York, NY, U.S.A. Simon & Schuster 1990 0671643517 Hardcover As New As New Jacket
The subtitle aptly describes Columbia University journalism professor Belford's biography of British novelist Violet Hunt (1862-1942). The daughter of a landscape artist and a writer, she came of age among the Pre-Raphaelites, her way strewn with literary plenipotentiaries: her diary, begun when she was 14, features such family friends as John Ruskin and Oscar Wilde. Hunt, called by one crony "a woman made for irregular situations," was drawn by her love of flirtation and intrigue into an affair at 22 with George Boughton, married and 30 years her senior. Diaries discovered by Belford fill in details of her painful affair with Oswald Crawfurdsp ok.g , from whom she evidently contracted syphilis. The biography deftly handles her most important relationship--with Ford Madox Ford--and her contradictory desire for sexual freedom and respectability. While giving Hunt her due as a writer (she wrote 17 novels and many short stories), Belford rightly concentrates on her subject's zest for unconventional love and life. Lavender and plum boards with silver lettering on spine. Appears to be first (not stated).Hard Cover. As New/As New.

"RAF Coastal Command's crucial role of helping to protect Britain's merchant shipping supply routes during 1939- 45 contributed hugely to the Allies' ability to sustain its war against Hitler's Nazi empire, yet because that role was unglamorous it received little media publicity and the vast majority of its airmen were virtually unknown to the public at large. Here, a broad cross- section of the men who flew above the oceans, and their deeds is presented as a tribute to the 'seamen of the air', without whose courage and sacrifices Britain and her allies might never have achieved their ultimate victory over the Axis Powers." 60 Carol Kenny Whispers from St. Mary's Well
St. Mary's County Sole Sentinel Press 2009 1449595944 First Edition Soft Cover Brand New No Jacket as issued
"Whispers from St. Mary's Well" is a fictional family saga steeped in mystery and mysticism. It chronicles the life of Caroline Rose Newlyn, who was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, in 1851-beneath the veil, predicting episodes of clairvoyance. She witnesses her family's painful losses, her mother's descent into deep depression, and a brutal murder that incites decades of racial violence. Virtually orphaned at a young age, she must find a way to raise herself with help from spiritual allies, a supportive community, and her role model, Cappy the Madcap, a character from her favorite book. The books that young Caroline read as a child inspired her, just as this book has inspired many readers. Please join them on a journey into the nineteenth century and into the world beyond. The book is narrated by Caroline's great-granddaughter, Carrie Rose Stillwell. While researching her genealogy she slips into a hypnotic trance and witnesses Caroline's traumatic childhood, discovering truths about her own life by diving into the wellspring of her heritage. She shares this story with you and encourages you to examine your own life through the eyes of your ancestors. You will be amazed by what you'll discover. This novel includes a Reading Group Discussion Guide, and the author, Carol Kenny, a long-time supporter of book clubs, invites your reading group to join her in the discussion of this book. You may visit her at www.carolkenny.com.

We write here of the prisons' first four years, 1934-1938, when the big names and the hard guys were in residence. From Al Capone to Roy Gardner, this book tells the story of the average day to the worst day in the prison where the guards were as tough as the convicts." This is a brand new book, published locally. " 'In Relentless Pursuit of an Education' is local history at its best. In their own words, residents of St. Mary's County, Maryland, tell of the separate and unequal black schools that existed until the county finally complied with Brown v. Board of education in 1967. This generation displays no nostalgia for segregation, but they do recall how their daily life was marked not only by inequality, but also by determination, caring, even fun. One bundred years from now, their voices will be a priceless resource for historians yearning to understand, 'What was it like? What was it really like?" 96 Eshelman, Ralph E. and Sheads, Scott S. Chesapeake Legends and Lore from the War of 1812
Charelston, SC History Press 2013 Paperback Like new
Signed by Ralph Eshelman. Like new, except for a very small stain on bottom. In the two hundred years following the War of 1812, the Chesapeake Campaign became romanticized in tall tales and local legends. St. Michael's on the Eastern Shore of Maryland was famously cast as the town that fooled the British, and in Baltimore, the defenders of Fort McHenry were reputably rallied by a remarkably patriotic pet rooster. In Virginia, the only casualty in a raid on Cape Henry was reportedly the lighthouse keeper's smokehouse larder, while Admiral Cockburn was said to have supped by the light of the burning Federal buildings in Washington, D.C. Newspaper stories, ordinary citizens and even military personnel embellished events, and two hundred years later, those embellishments have become regional lore. Join historians Ralph E. Eshelman and Scott S. Sheads as they search for the history behind the legends of the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake.

98 Farrell, John Freud's Paranoid Quest : Psychoanalysis and Modern Suspicion
New York, NY, U.S.A. New York University Press 1996 0814726496 Hardcover As New Fine Jacket
Book appears unread and is solid and bright. "In Freud's Paranoid Quest John Farrell analyzes the personality and thought of Sigmund Freud in order to give insight into modernity's paranoid character and into the true nature of Freudian psychoanalysis. Farrell's Freud is not the path-breaking psychologist he claimed to be, but the fashioner and prisoner of a total system of suspicion. The most gifted of paranoids, he deployed this system as a self-heroizing myth and a compelling historical ideology. Strangest of all, Freud's science borrow the rhetoric of the satiric romance adapted from his great model, Don Quizote. Freud asks all of us to share in the suspicion, victimization, and even the charm of the paranoid romance, to follow th heroic psychoanalyst on his quest in the quixotic territory of the unconscious mind.Hard Cover. As New/Fine.
