1 Carol Kenny Whispers from St. Mary's Well
St. Mary's County Sole Sentinel Press 2009 1449595944 / 9781449595944 First Edition Soft Cover Brand New No Jacket as issued
"Whispers from St. Mary's Well" is a fictional family saga steeped in mystery and mysticism. It chronicles the life of Caroline Rose Newlyn, who was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland, in 1851-beneath the veil, predicting episodes of clairvoyance. She witnesses her family's painful losses, her mother's descent into deep depression, and a brutal murder that incites decades of racial violence. Virtually orphaned at a young age, she must find a way to raise herself with help from spiritual allies, a supportive community, and her role model, Cappy the Madcap, a character from her favorite book. The books that young Caroline read as a child inspired her, just as this book has inspired many readers. Please join them on a journey into the nineteenth century and into the world beyond. The book is narrated by Caroline's great-granddaughter, Carrie Rose Stillwell. While researching her genealogy she slips into a hypnotic trance and witnesses Caroline's traumatic childhood, discovering truths about her own life by diving into the wellspring of her heritage. She shares this story with you and encourages you to examine your own life through the eyes of your ancestors. You will be amazed by what you'll discover. This novel includes a Reading Group Discussion Guide, and the author, Carol Kenny, a long-time supporter of book clubs, invites your reading group to join her in the discussion of this book. Ocean Hall Discovery of an American Classic, James Carroll Boyd, M.D.
6 James Carroll Boyd, M.D. Ocean Hall Discovery of an American Classic
Maryland James Carroll Boyd, M.D. 2011 First Edition Oversize Paperback New
Dr. Jamie Boyd was born in Washington, DC, as a fifth generation Washingtonian. He grew up in Southern Maryland in St. Mary's County where his family went back over 300 years. It is also here that he has practiced medicine as a physician for the last 34 years. During most of this time he has also studied, restored, and studied again the historic home Ocean Hall. "Ocean Hall, Discovery of and American Classic' represents over 30 years of research in the fields of architecture and history in early colonial Maryland. In 355 pages, 610 illustrations and 297 footnotes, it meticulously records the many discoveries made at Ocean Hall, the surrounding of Bushwood and surrounding region once known as St. Clement's Mannor. Much of this information involves the late 17th and early 18th Centuries, and most of it has never been published before. Ocean Hall is the oldest house of Classic domestic architecture in America, and the only building that survives with an ancient construction technique known as a cruck roof. It is also one of our nation's earliest brick buildings. The unique and rare architectural and archaeological features of this home are displayed in numerous photographs throughout the manuscript. This book also chronicles, in great detail, recent scholarship on the earliest surviving buildings from America's Colonial South. This includes up to date discoveries in dendrochronology which, for the first time, have documented the true age of these early structures.

When real estate agent Diana Sullivan, raised in affluent in Chevy Chase, steps from her car onto the gravel parking lot of Mattingly's General Store in June 1957, she enters an unfamiliar world--the isolated and rural 7th District of St. Mary's County in Southern Maryland. As she walks toward the store seeking directions, she is jostled by a young man. While Harry helps Diana retrieve the scattered contents of her purse, he gives her a preview of the local vernacular and mannerisms. Although Diana leaves the young waterman in anger after this volatile first meeting, she will welcome Harry's assistance later in the day. In time, Diana grows to love Harry, his family, and the region's culture. She enjoys the warmth and acceptance of the locals, a tightly knit community of watermen and tobacco farmers, many of whose families' roots extent back to Southern Maryland's colonial days. However, she knows that her upper-class family would disapprove of her involvement with these rural people. Soon, critical external pressures buffet the cocoon that Diana and Harry have spun around their relationship, causing the two lovers to question whether their love can survive.
